The European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a collaborative initiative between the EU, European countries, and private partners. Its goal is to develop a world-class supercomputing ecosystem in Europe. The EuroHPC JU was established in 2018, and Serbia became a member of the initiative in June 2022.
Currently, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has acquired nine of the largest and fastest supercomputers in Europe and globally. These supercomputers are equipped with various architectures to meet the diverse needs of European HPC users. The EuroHPC JU guarantees that users can access any of these top-tier systems, no matter where they are located in Europe.
Understanding and addressing complex challenges in various fields heavily relies on supercomputing. The main benefits are:
In medicine, supercomputing assists in drug discovery, personalized medical therapies, and the development of treatments for diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular conditions, Alzheimer’s, and rare genetic disorders. It has also played a crucial role in the fight against COVID-19 by testing and repositioning drugs.
In weather forecasting, it provides accurate simulations for predicting weather patterns, storms, and floods, which supports early warning systems to protect lives and property.
In climate monitoring supercomputing improves our understanding of climate change, geophysical processes, and resource management. It supports sustainable agriculture and reduces the environmental impact of industries.
In security, it enhances cybersecurity and helps protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats.
In innovation and efficiency, supercomputing accelerates product design, optimizes production cycles, reduces costs, and improves resource efficiency in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, and health.
In industrial applications, it leads to the development of safer vehicles, more efficient energy solutions, and sustainable building technologies.
For SMEs, cloud-based supercomputing makes advanced technology accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises, enabling them to innovate and compete.
In science, supercomputing drives progress across various scientific disciplines, from fundamental physics to material sciences and earth sciences. It helps explore new frontiers of knowledge and model complex phenomena.
