The 62nd edition of the TOP500 list was released on 13 November 2023. The TOP500 project ranks and provides details of the 500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems globally. The project was initiated back in 1993 and updates the list of supercomputers twice a year, in June and November.
Out of the 143 supercomputing installations listed in Europe, only 4 are from our region. The Bulgarian Discoverer supercomputer operated by Consortium Petascale Supercomputer Bulgaria is ranked at 166th place. The VEGA cluster in Slovenia is at 198th place, while the Hungarian Komodor cluster is at 266th place. Our colleagues from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences have a new installation, HEMUS supercomputer, which has been placed at 360th place. We would like to congratulate them on this achievement!
The MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, ranked 8th in the world, will soon be launched by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). The BSC is the only supercomputing center in Europe to have two entries in the top 20 of the list, including the general-purpose partition, which is the world's largest based on the well-known x86 computing architecture, and the accelerated partition, which is the third most powerful in Europe and eighth in the world.
In the latest edition of the list, there are five new or upgraded entries in the top 10. However, the Frontier system located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, USA is still ranked as the only true exascale machine. It has an HPL (Portable Implementation of the High-Performance Linpack Benchmark for Distributed-Memory Computers) score of 1.194 Exaflop/s, which is the highest reported performance for any system on the list. Therefore, Frontier remains the No. 1 system on the TOP500, and it is still the only system with an HPL performance exceeding one Exaflop/s.
AMD has demonstrated its strong dominance in the field of high-performance computing (HPC). The company's technology is currently powering 140 supercomputers, marking a remarkable 39% increase year over year, according to the latest Top500 list. Furthermore, AMD is responsible for powering eight out of the top ten most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world, as per the latest Green500 list.
