EuroHPC Joint Undertaking recently signed agreements with six European sites to host and operate quantum computers. These computers will enable European users to experiment with various quantum technologies alongside top supercomputers.
The six new EuroHPC quantum computers will be integrated into existing supercomputers in Czechia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain. The selected hosting entities will operate on behalf of EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and ensure diversity in quantum technologies and architectures. This will allow Europe to lead in this novel field and provide European users access to diverse and complementary quantum technologies.
The new quantum computer infrastructure will be accessible to European users for research and development purposes, regardless of their location. It will benefit the scientific community, industry, and the public sector and facilitate the development of various applications relevant to Europe's industry, science, and society. This infrastructure will expand the capabilities of the existing European supercomputing infrastructure.
In October 2022, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking announced the selection of six sites to host European quantum computers. The hosting entities were chosen through a call for expression of interest in March 2022 for hosting and operating European quantum computers integrated into HPC supercomputers.
Six new EuroHPC quantum computers:
LUMI-Q will be hosted at IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre premises in Ostrava, Czechia, and integrated into the EuroHPC supercomputer KAROLINA.
EuroQCS-France will be driven by GENCI (Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif). It will be coupled to the supercomputer Joliot-Curie first and then to the upcoming exascale supercomputer conveyed by the Jules Verne consortium.
Euro-Q-Exa will be hosted and operated by the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ) in Germany, one of the three national supercomputing centers of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing, where it will be integrated into the LRZ leadership-class supercomputer, currently SuperMUC-NG.
EuroQCS-Italy will be hosted in the datacentre of CINECA located in the Bologna Technopole in Italy and integrated into the EuroHPC pre-exascale supercomputer Leonardo, currently ranked as the 4th fastest supercomputer in the world.
EuroQCS-Poland will be hosted by the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center in Poland and integrated into an HPC infrastructure in Poznan.
EuroQCS-Spain will be hosted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Spain and integrated into the pre-exascale EuroHPC supercomputer MareNostrum5.
