LUMI is the fastest supercomputer in Europe and the third fastest globally, according to the Top500 list published in June 2023. It is situated on the premises of a former paper mill in Kajaani, Finland. Placing the machine on the grounds of a former paper mill significantly reduced the carbon footprint since ICT infrastructure construction contributes considerably to the CO2 footprint. LUMI uses 100% carbon-free hydroelectric energy for operations and recycles waste heat to heat surrounding houses in Kajaani. The waste heat accounts for up to 20 percent of the district heating in the city and substantially reduces the entire city's annual carbon footprint by 12,400 tons – an amount that equals the output from nearly 4,000 passenger cars. Due to this, LUMI earned the seventh spot on the Green500 list released in June 2023. This prestigious ranking confirms that LUMI is one of the most environmentally friendly supercomputers in the world.
The LUMI supercomputer won the Green Data Centre of the Year award in the 2023 Data Centre World Awards for its efforts in reducing emissions and promoting recycling and reuse.
